Florianópolis is the capital and second largest city of the state of Santa Catarina, in the South region of Brazil. It is composed of one main island, Santa Catarina Island, a continental part and surrounding small islands. It has a population of 477,798, according to the 2016 IBGE population estimate,the second most populous city in the state (after Joinville), and the 47th in Brazil. The metropolitan area has an estimated population of 1,111,702, the 21st largest in the country. The city is known for having the country's third highest Human Development Index score among all Brazilian cities.The city is considered safe by Brazilian standards. In 2014, Florianópolis had the second-lowest incidence of murders of Brazilian capitals.
